       The Wuhan City GPON traffic monitoring project is a key urban smart traffic upgrade initiative focused on traffic signal intersection video supervision, road condition real-time collection, and urban traffic safety governance. This project fully adopts GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) fiber access architecture complying with ITU-T G.984 industry standards, replacing traditional network access solutions to construct a dedicated, high-bandwidth, low-latency and highly stable private optical network for urban intersection monitoring. The core goal of the project is to comprehensively upgrade the overall monitoring image quality, network transmission stability and terminal access capacity of scattered traffic signal points across Wuhan, supporting intelligent traffic scheduling, road violation capture, accident traceability and urban public security management.
       The entire network adopts a mature point-to-multipoint passive optical network structure, consisting of central OLT aggregation equipment, passive ODN optical distribution network and front-end industrial user terminals. To adapt to the complex outdoor operating environment of urban road intersections and meet large-scale centralized access requirements, the project uniformly deploys 8GE industrial-grade ONUs for all front-end access terminals, with a total of 718 ONU devices put into use. Different from commercial and household ONUs, industrial-grade terminals support wide temperature operation, built-in lightning protection, surge protection, dustproof and waterproof performance, which can stably operate in high temperature, low temperature, rainy and humid outdoor scenarios all year round, effectively reducing offline failure rates of traffic monitoring equipment.
       Equipped with 8 Gigabit Ethernet ports per terminal, the 8GE industrial ONU provides sufficient and high-speed access bandwidth for front-end acquisition equipment. In this project, a total of 2026 traffic intersection surveillance cameras are connected to the GPON network system. A single industrial ONU can carry multiple high-definition cameras simultaneously, realizing centralized access and unified data uploading of monitoring equipment at each traffic signal intersection. Compared with traditional network architectures, GPON passive networking eliminates a large number of intermediate active switching equipment, simplifies the on-site wiring structure of urban road intersections, reduces equipment power consumption and later operation and maintenance workload, and improves the overall stability of the monitoring system.
       This project fundamentally optimizes the deficiencies of the original traffic monitoring network, such as insufficient bandwidth, blurry video images, frame loss and intermittent network disconnection during peak traffic periods. The high-bandwidth bearing capability of GPON ensures lossless real-time transmission of 1080P and high-definition panoramic monitoring videos. It effectively improves the definition, fluency and real-time performance of intersection monitoring footage, enabling traffic management departments to accurately capture vehicle violations, pedestrian traffic behaviors and road congestion conditions.
       Furthermore, the GPON network features strong scalability and flexible networking. While meeting the access requirements of 2026 existing cameras, the network reserves abundant bandwidth and port resources for subsequent intelligent traffic equipment such as intelligent bayonets, traffic flow detectors and road condition sensing devices. By building a standardized and unified GPON traffic private network, the project realizes the standardized and intelligent upgrade of Wuhan urban road intersection monitoring systems, greatly improves urban traffic management efficiency, strengthens urban road safety supervision capabilities, and lays a solid network infrastructure foundation for the construction of Wuhan smart traffic and smart city system.
