Introduction and Differences of EPON, GPON, ONU and OLT
This document adopts Q&A format to professionally explain the definitions and core differences between OLT, ONU, EPON and GPON, which is suitable for official website display and industry popular science.
Q1: What is OLT?
OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. It is a core active optical device deployed on the operator’s central office side in the PON network system. As the central control node of the entire optical access network, it is responsible for aggregating, managing and forwarding all user terminal data. It connects to the upper-layer core network and communicates with all ONU terminals under the coverage, realizing unified bandwidth allocation, signal sending and receiving, and device management for user access terminals.
Q2: What is ONU?
ONU stands for Optical Network Unit. It is a user-side terminal device of the PON network, deployed at the user end such as communities, office buildings and enterprise rooms. Corresponding to the OLT device, ONU is responsible for receiving optical signals sent by OLT, converting optical signals into electrical signals applicable to user terminal equipment, and uploading user data to the central office OLT. It is the key device for users to access optical fiber broadband networks.
Q3: What is EPON?
EPON stands for Ethernet Passive Optical Network. It is an Ethernet-based passive optical network standard formulated based on IEEE 802.3ah protocol. EPON adopts point-to-multipoint network structure, features simple structure, low cost and good compatibility with traditional Ethernet. It provides symmetric upstream and downstream bandwidth of 1.25Gbps, and is widely used in civilian residential broadband access scenarios with stable and basic network demands.
Q4: What is GPON?
GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network. It is a high-performance passive optical network standard based on ITU-T G.984 protocol. Compared with EPON, GPON has higher transmission bandwidth, stronger anti-interference ability and better service quality guarantee. It supports downstream bandwidth of 2.5Gbps and upstream bandwidth of 1.25Gbps, and can carry multiple services such as broadband, voice and video simultaneously, which is suitable for enterprise office, high-bandwidth home access and multi-service integrated access scenarios.
Q5: What are the core differences between OLT and ONU?
First, the deployment location is different: OLT is deployed in the operator central office room, while ONU is deployed on the user side. Second, the network role is different: OLT is the core management and aggregation device of the PON network, belonging to the upper-layer network equipment; ONU is the user access terminal device, belonging to the bottom-layer access equipment. Third, the function is different: OLT undertakes network aggregation, signal scheduling and device management; ONU only completes signal conversion and user network access. The two cooperate to form a complete PON optical fiber access system.
Q6: What are the core differences between EPON and GPON?
Firstly, they follow different industry protocols: EPON follows IEEE 802.3ah Ethernet protocol, while GPON follows ITU-T G.984 telecommunication standard protocol. Secondly, the bandwidth performance is different: GPON has higher downlink transmission bandwidth and larger single-port capacity. Thirdly, service carrying capacity varies: GPON supports richer service types, more perfect QoS quality guarantee mechanism and stronger fault tolerance, which is suitable for complex multi-service scenarios; EPON has simpler functions and lower cost, more suitable for single civilian broadband access. In addition, GPON has longer transmission distance and stronger network stability compared with EPON.
